부산국제비디오아트페스티발 BIVAF는 매년 국내외 작품 공모를 통해 동시대적 문제들을 다루는 실험적인 영상 작품을 상영하고 있습니다. 또한, 지역 큐레이터와의 협업을 통해 주제전을 기획하여 국내외 동시대 영상예술의 흐름과 지형을 파악할 수 있도록 전시를 구성하고 있습니다.

2022년 제16회 부산국제비디오아트페스티발 《신세계로부터 From the New World》는 기존 전시장인 공간 힘에서의 전시와 더불어 부산과 경남 지역에 위치한 4개의 협력 공간에서 진행됩니다. 경남도립미술관, 공간미음, 모퉁이극장, 무사이, 4개의 협력 공간별 특성에 맞춘 연계 전시와 스크리닝을 보실 수 있습니다. 이번 행사는 포스트소비에트 도시와 공간을 다룬 주제전과 수상작을 포함한 7편의 선정작을 선보이는 공모 선정작 전시로 구성되어 있습니다.

​올해 공모에는 약 480여 건(약 690편, 60개국)이 접수되었습니다. 1차 내부 심의를 거친 후 두 명의 외부 심사위원과 함께한 2차 심의를 통해 수상작으로 리아 리잘디의 <텔루리안 드라마>를, 경쟁작으로는 리아 리잘디의 <베크렐>, 자크라왈 닐탐롱의 <헛간 방화>, 팅통창의 <빈랑나무, 새 둥지 고사리, 아프리카 달팽이>, 에시 케이시의 <바다의 별의 투명함에 반하는 움직임>, 에드윈 로 윤 팅의 <종말과 조상의 궤적>, 차나손 차이키티폰의 <당신이 남긴 모든 것>, 총 일곱 편의 작품을 선정하였습니다.

주제전 《신세계로부터(From the New World)》에서는 포스트소비에트 도시와 공간을 탐구합니다. 소비에트 시기의 건축과 도시에 대한 미학적 분석과 관찰은 포스트 소비에트 국가들의 비디오 아트와 영화에서 두드러지는 하나의 경향입니다. 이번 주제전에서는 이러한 경향에 속하는 포스트 소비에트 세대와 그 이후에 태어난 작가들의 작업을 소개하는 동시에 지금도 계속되고 있는 이들 지역의 노동 문제, 독립 이후의 정체성, 시민운동 등의 주제를 다루며 적극적으로 정치적 목소리를 내고 있는 작가들의 작업들을 함께 소개합니다.

Busan International Video Art Festival BIVAF aims to support experimental video arts that deal with contemporary issues through international open calls. To explore contemporary video arts and expand the base of the field of the arts, BIVAF organizes thematic exhibitions in collaboration with local curators each year.

 

In 2022, BIVAF celebrated its 16th edition. The 16th Busan International Video Art Festival <From the New World> was held in four partner spaces in Busan–Gyeongnam Area and Space Heem, the main venue. At Gyeongnam Art Museum, Spacemium, BNK Art Cinema Coner Theater, and Musai, various video artworks tailored to the characteristics of each space were screened. Programs of the 16th BIVAF consisted of 'Thematic Exhibition' dealing with post-Soviet cities and spaces and 'Selection 2022', screening seven selected artworks, including a prize-winner.

 

About 480 applications (approximately 690 pieces from 60 countries) were submitted to this year's open call. After the first selection by the BIVAF selection board and the final selection with two external jurors, Tellurian Drama by Riar Rizaldi was selected as the prize-winner. Becquerel by Riar Rizaldi, Barn Burner by Jakrawal Nilthamrong, Betelnut Tree, Bird's Net Fern and Giant African Snails by Ting Tong Chang, A Movement Against the Transparency of the Stars of the Seas by Esy Casey, End Time and The Trajectories of Ancestors by Edwin Lo Yun Ting, and All the Things You Leave Behind by Chanasorn Chaikitiporn were shortlisted for the competition.

 

Thematic Exhibition, From the New World, presents nine video artworks that explore post-Soviet cities and spaces. The aesthetic analysis and observation of Soviet architecture and cities are prominent trends in post-Soviet countries' video art and cinema. The exhibition introduces the works of the post-Soviet and the subsequent generation of artists and the works of active political voices dealing with labor problems, post-independence identity, and civic movements.

 

Lastly, the BIVAF team would like to thank the jury, Deawoong Ahn(curator at Busan Museum of Art), Sohyun Ahn(independent curator), and coordinator Hyeju Yoon, who shared their opinions for long hours, as well as Gang-san Jeong and Seyoung Jin who helped us a lot with subtitles and catalog translation.
